A few years ago, when Nigel was Captain of the Seniors at Pastures Golf Club, we had an annual event, I think it might have been at his Senior Captain's Away Day, where it was always the tradition to have a raffle to contribute towards our funds. Although in the past, everybody bought raffle tickets, not everybody won a prize, but not this time.
Nigel came into the meeting with numerous large boxes full of gift bags. He included raffle money in the entry fee so there was no selling of raffle tickets but, at the appointed time, there was a prize draw. Everybody had been given a single raffle ticket.
We didn't realise at the time, but the number of raffle tickets distributed to the members was the exact same number as the prizes that Nigel had brought in.
Contained in each bag was a nice New Zealand Red Wine, a sleeve of gold balls, and a number of other small gifts, and everybody received a bag.
Nigel's idea was that every member who attended would get this amazing gift bag, and nobody would be missed out, and that is how I remember Nigel, for his kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity.
I never saw Nigel get angry or lose his temper, but he did quite often suggest that he should give up golf, when things were not going his way. But he had a great spirit about him and it was always good to be with him, especially when the dry thoughtfulness gave way to joy and giggles.
He always spoke very proudly about his family, and was always keen to know what was happening in other peoples lives and share their news.
I will miss my friend, as we all will in the Seniors at Pastures Golf Club
